These
videos, possibly the first ever videotaping of the
Rastafari, were filmed August 5th, 1969 in the shanty
that housed the Ethiopian World Federation Local 37 in
Salt Lane, Kingston, Jamaica. Lambros Comitas, an
anthropology professor at Teachers College, Columbia
University, taped these events at the request and
invitation of Mortimo Planno, a powerful and striking
figure. Kumi, as known by his friends, played a pivotal
role in the public unfolding of the Rastafarian movement
in Jamaica. He also played a critically important part
in initiating the politically potent study of that
movement. As part of his lifelong dedication to the
movement, he participated as a Rastafarian member in the
historic Government Mission to Africa, a mission sent to
explore the possibilities of repatriation. These films
contain Rastafarian rites and an Amharic lesson.

The
Ethiopian Coup d'Etat of December
1960
In
December 1960, Emperor Haile Sellassie departed for a
state visit to Brazil. Soon after his departure, the
Officers of the Imperial Guard, led by their Commander,
Lt. General Mengistu Newaye and his brother Girmame
launched a coup-d'etat. After seizing key points in the
capital, they placed the leading figures of the nobility
and the government under arrest in the Green Salon in
the Guenete Leul Palace. Empress Menen, Princess
Tenagnework and the Duchess of Harrar along with their
children were placed under guard at their respective
homes. Crown Prince Asfaw Wossen was forced to go on the
radio and announce that the Imperial Guard had
overthrown the Emperor, and that he was assuming the
throne. He announced that he would be a constitutional
monarch and would "live on a salary". He announced that
this was done to liberate Ethiopians from poverty and
backwardness. He also announced that his cousin Ras
Imiru was to be Prime Minister, and that Lt. General
Mulugueta Bulli would be Chief-of-Staff. Ras Imiru, also
a captive along with the Crown Prince and was also
forced to aquiece. General Mulugueta, was not
cooperative, and was held prisoner in the Green Salon.
The coup leaders had made certain key mistakes. They
failed to win over or arrest the commanders of the
regular army, and they failed to seize three key
figures. One was Prince Asrate Kassa, the leading
conservative nobleman; the other two were Crown Princess
Medferiashwork and Prince Sahle Sellassie. Crown
Princess Medferiashwork, convinced that her husband was
being forced to accept the throne, played an important
role. She and her children had been left alone in their
house, so she contacted the commanders of the Army and
had them meet in her house with Prince Asrate Kassa and
the other nobles who had eluded capture. This enabled
them to coordinate their efforts and resolve to refuse
to accept the coup-d'etat. Prince Sahle Sellassie was a
ham radio hobbyist. He was also left alone in his home,
so he was able to send out a message to ham radio
operators that the Imperial Guard in Ethiopia had
launched a coup-d'etat against his father. The ham radio
operators around the world were able to contact the
Emperors plane on its way to Brazil, and he promptly
turned back. The final straw was when the Patriarch of
the Orthodox Church, Abune Baslios, refused to recognize
the new government. Instead he issued an excommunication
against those who had defied the monarch anointed by the
church, and called on the people not to accept them as
their rulers. This edict was printed up and scattered
all over Addis Ababa by Army helicopters. News arrived
that the Emperor had landed in Asmara, and that the
population there had turned out by the thousands to
greet him in an act of loyalty. The army then stormed
the Guenete Leul Palace pushing out the Imperial Guards,
and freed the Crown Prince and Ras Imiru. However, the
coup leaders had fled, but not before machine-gunning
the prisoners in the Green Salon, killing many of the
leading figures of the nobility and the government. The
Emperor returned and order restored.

Documentary
about His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I, also known
as by the title (Conquering Lion of the tribe of Judah
Elect of God King of Kings Emperor of Ethiopia). It is
an interesting documentary film with rare video and
photos, written and narrated by David Holden of the BBC.
Filmed almost four decades ago, the documentary itself
is part of history. This film shows the rise of Selassie
I to power and his struggle with fascist Italy during
world war II. The documentary also explores, The
betrayal of the western nations (Particularly then
English prime minister Neville Chamberlain and the
French foreign minister) , by sacrificing ETHIOPIA to
appease fascist Italy. Very educational and interesting
piece of work.

the speech that Haile Selassie I spoke before the
General Assembly of the United Nations, and that served
as inspiration for Bob Marley to write his famous song
"War". The speech comes from the UN archives and has
been recorded on tape from a radio show in 1984 (!) with
noise removed as much as possible. It is public domain.

Ethiopia,
Africa's Ancient Kingdom 1961 - Approx. 17
Minutes Ethiopia is one of the oldest countries
in the world and Africa's second-most populous nation.
Ethiopia has yielded some of humanity's oldest traces,
making the area a primary factor in the origin and
developmental history of humanity, with recent studies
claiming the vicinity of present-day Addis Ababa as the
point from which human beings migrated around the world.
Ethiopian dynastic history traditionally began with the
reign of Emperor Menelik I in 1000 BC. The roots of the
Ethiopian state are similarly deep, dating with unbroken
continuity to at least the Aksumite Empire (which
officially used the name "Ethiopia" in the 4th century)
and its predecessor state, D`mt (with early 1st
millennium BC roots). After a period of decentralized
power in the 18th and early 19th centuries known as the
Zemene Mesafint ("Era of the Judges/Princes"), the
country was reunited in 1855 by Kassa Hailu, who became
Emperor Tewodros II, beginning Ethiopia's modern
history. Ethiopia's borders underwent significant
territorial expansion to its modern borders for the rest
of the century due to several migrations and commercial
integration as well as conquests, especially by Emperor
Menelik II and Ras Gobena, culminating in its victory
over the Italians at the Battle of Adwa in 1896 with the
military leadership of Ras Makonnen, and ensuring its
sovereignty and freedom from colonization. It was
brutally occupied by Benito Mussolini's Italy from 1936
to 1941, ending with its liberation by British
Commonwealth and Ethiopian patriot
forces.

EXILE OF THE ETHIOPIAN HEBREWS
A.K.A. THE BLACK JEWS [1983]
The tragic plight of Ethiopian Hebrews a.k.a.
The Black Jews (Falashas) takes center stage in this
well-researched and moving documentary by Simcha
Jacobovici. The Falashas ("exiles") have lived for over
2,000 years in this region and are vastly outnumbered in
a state that is half Muslim, with Christians making up
the next largest religious group (Jews are too minor a
group, less than 1%, to figure in statistics). But the
discrimination arises from politics: Jews were massacred
after the 1974 Marxist military coup -- not by the
Marxists, but by their opposition, because they feared
the Falashas would support the government. They are also
prosecuted by the Marxists who fear Judaism stops them
from supporting the government. In interviews with Jews
living in distant villages, stories of torture and
murder at the hands of Ethiopian authorities are told in
all their tragedy, and the Falashas in the Sudanese
refugee camps were afraid to be photographed. Meanwhile,
Israel says it is "doing everything it can" to help the
Falashas, while Jewish agencies in North America claim
that Israel is doing next to nothing in that regard. In
the end it becomes very clear that the Falashas suffer
from a double stigma: they are both black and
Jewish.

AND RESISTANCE 1776-1865
Dr. John Henrik Clarke was born
January 1, 1915 in Union Springs, Alabama and died July
16, 1998 in New York City. His family came from a long
line of sharecroppers. Dr. Clark, was a Pan-Africanist
American writer, historian, professor, and a pioneer in
the creation of Africana Studies and professional
institutions in academia starting in the late 1960s.
Clarke noticed that although many bible stories
"unfolded in Africa...I saw no African people in the
printed and illustrated Sunday school lessons," he wrote
in 1985. "I began to suspect at this early age that
someone had distorted the image of my people. My long
search for the true history of African people the world
over began." That search took him to libraries, museums,
attics, archives and collections in Asia, the Caribbean,
Europe, Latin America and Africa. What he found was that
the history of black people is worldwide; that "the
first light of human consciousness and the world's first
civilizations were in Africa"; that the so called Dark
Ages were dark only for Europe and that some African
nations at the time were larger than any in Europe; that
as Africa sends its children to Europe to study because
that is where the best universities are, early Greece
once sent its children to Africa to study because that
was where the best universities were; and that slavery,
although devastating was neither the beginning nor the
end of Black people's impact on the world. Clarke
gathered his findings into books on such figures as the
early 20th century mass movement leader Marcus Garvey,
into articles with titles like "Africa in the Conquest
of Spain" and "Harlem as mecca and New Jerusalem," and
many books including American Heritage's two volume
"History of Africa."

At
historic Howard University in 1994 Dr. Khalid Muhammad
keynoted the world wide-watched Black Holocaust
conference with Dr. Leonard Jeffries, Dr. Tony Martin,
Steve Cokely and convened by then student organizer
Malik Zulu Shabazz.
At Howard University on April 19. 1994, Khalid
Muhammad further belittled the devastation of the
Holocaust and ridiculed its survivors. "You make me sick
-- always got some old crinkly wrinkled cracker that you
bring up, talking about, 'this is one of the Holocaust
victims.' Goddamn it! I'm looking at a whole audience
full of Holocaust victims," Muhammad told his audience
of 2,000. Continuing, he said that the "Holocaust lasted
10 years; ours lasted 500. How can you compare, buddy?
You are so arrogant."
The
line-up of speakers at Howard also included other
individuals whose rhetoric has been embraced by
BAHC,(The Black African Holocaust Council) most notably,
Professor Leonard Jeffries and Professor Tony Martin. In
Jeffries' speech, after describing the enslavement of
Africans as "the most devastating holocaust ever
conceived in the mind," he dismissed the extermination
of six million Jews as irrelevant. "That which occurred
in Europe, the European Nazi Holocaust of the European
Jew has to do with white on white crime," Jeffries said.
"It has nothing to do with African people, Asian people,
Native American people." In his own speech about the
"Black Holocaust," Professor Martin minimized the
misdeeds of Africans who sold fellow blacks into
slavery. Then, echoing an erroneous charge that has been
leveled by Louis Farrakhan, among others, Martin argued
that the behavior of these Africans was no worse than
that of Zionist Jews who, he alleged, collaborated with
the Nazis during World War II.
